Dog

This vampire doesn't mind dogs

Twilight saga star Kellan Lutz, who plays Emmett Cullen, has joined forces with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and rescued a mixed breed pup.

Taking a completely different stance on dogs from his wolf hating character in the Twilight, he seems to love pooches and want to help out as many as possible.

Kellan named his new pup, Kola, is so passionate about helping homeless animals that he and Kola are starring in an "Adopt, Don't Buy" advertisement to urge people to rescue homeless dogs rather than buy them from pet stores.

Says Kellan, "It's our job to take animals under our wing, take care of them and give them a place to live."

Can you handle owning a Marmaduke?

Marmaduke
Great news! The movie Marmaduke comes out this month! Yipee! He looks so cute and funny, but looking after a dog is hard work. Here are some tips to see if your family could handle owning a Great Dane like Marmaduke...

1) Great Danes generally weigh 56 to 92 kilos at adulthood.
2) At 6 months old, a Great Dane can knock you down the stairs if it jumps on you.
3) They may be cute but some dogs can be destructive. They'll chew on anything and everything even furniture and clothing.

4) They eat up to two bags 20 kilo dog food per month.
5) Great Danes love cuddles and thrive on constant companionship.
6) If the dog is accustomed to being in air-conditioning, he or she can be very susceptible to heat stroke.

7)Like Marmaduke, they are very friendly and social dogs.

8) Although these dogs are big, as they get older they can suffer from joint problems, so it is advisable to gradually decrease high impact exercise as they get older.

Assistance Dogs Australia

Reading Labs

Move over bookworms, the Reading Labs are here! Assistance Dogs Australia has set up a program to help kids who have trouble reading.
Assistance Dogs in the community visit schools with their recipients and help students with reading difficulties.

While they may look like your average balls of fur, don’t judge a book by its cover – these pups can achieve anything!

“The idea of the program is that children read to the dogs, who not only make reading more fun, but who provide a non judgemental audience” says Assistance Dogs Australia’s Top Dog, Richard Lord.

If you are interested in getting a Reading Lab visit to your school or if you know a an assistance dog handler that would be interested in helping with the program email Assistance Dogs Australia on info@assistancedogs.org.au
