Twenty-one year old handler from NSW, Shannon Barden, is gearing up for one of the biggest competitions of his career. This Easter, Shannon and his prize Borzoi, Murphy will be competing at the Purina ProPlan Sydney Royal Dog Show.
Shannon, from Bishops Bridge in the Hunter Valley, is no stranger to the limelight and has been competing since the age of seven, moving quickly up the ranks from Junior Dog Handler to Top Handler. Balancing his full-time job as a dog groomer with his love of competing, Shannon has more than 70 ‘Best in Show’ titles under his belt.
We speak with him about his success:
Where did you meet Murphy?
My family and I bred Murphy under the successful prefix of “Kenibea Borzois”.
Why did you decide to compete with him?
We love the Sydney Royal Dog Show, the biggest show in the southern hemisphere. Over 3500s dog will be competing in Conformation , Obedience, Agility, and Sweepstakes Conformation. The atmosphere is incomparable when the crowds are gathered in the stands around the rings.
How does it feel to be able to compete in the upcoming Royal Dog Show?
It is wonderful to show to judges from around the world, many of whom are well respected for their years and dedication to the sport of purebred dogs.
Why do you think Murphy is so successful?
We believe Murphy is so successful because of the quality dogs that he has been bred down from and feature in his pedigree. In saying that, dog shows are about high standards of presentation and Purina Pro Plan do a wonderful job looking after the wellbeing of our much loved friends, healthy coat and skin are essential so are as well correct weight and muscle, all of combined these can make for a success career.
What’s your favourite part of competing?
Travelling the world, meeting wonderful people who become life long friends and creating memories that will last the test of time.
Shannon and Murphy will be competing on Thursday 26 March in the Toys, Hounds and Non-Sporting Breed judging. If successful, Shannon and Murphy will go on to compete for the Best in Show title on Monday 6th April.
